In 2012 David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto launched the XRP Ledger, with its native currency XRP. In September that year, along with Chris Larsen, they founded the company that is today known as Ripple.

The XRPL architects gifted 80 billion XRP to Ripple so that the company could build use cases around the digital asset.

Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into a cryptographically-secured escrow account. By securing this XRP, people can mathematically verify the maximum supply of Ripple’s XRP that can enter the market.

Unlike proof-of-work or proof-of-stake blockchains, the XRPL uses a consensus protocol, in which servers called validators come to an agreement on the order and outcome of XRPL transactions every 3-5 seconds.
